This week’s AMP Session is Finding Forrester (2000). AMP, the Alignment Movie Process, is a framework I helped create to help people recognize the emotional beliefs and patterns shaping their lives, using film as a mirror.
At first glance, Finding Forrester may seem like an unusual film to pair with a conversation about artificial intelligence. It was made long before AI became part of our daily lives, but the question at the center of the film feels surprisingly current: what happens when extraordinary intelligence is not fully integrated with the life around it?
How could a film made more than twenty five years ago have anything useful to say about artificial intelligence in these modern and complicated times? Maybe quite a lot.
AI systems are becoming more capable at an extraordinary pace. We are hearing about agents doing things they were not asked to do, cybersecurity breaches, AI helping develop the next generation of AI, and researchers warning that capability may be moving faster than our ability to understand and safeguard it.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei begins his recent argument by saying AI could cure major diseases, accelerate economic growth, create abundance and dramatically improve human life. He then makes the case for deliberately pacing frontier AI development so safety work has time to catch up.
Both possibilities deserve our attention. What interests me is what connects them.
What if the challenge is not simply whether artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, but whether wisdom can develop alongside that intelligence?
An Extraordinary Mind Can Still Be a Closed System
In Finding Forrester, Jamal Wallace is a gifted young writer whose intelligence does not fit neatly into the world around him. Some people admire his ability. Others are threatened by it. He has to figure out how to carry that brilliance in a world that does not always know what to do with it.
Then he meets William Forrester, an acclaimed writer who has already achieved the kind of intellectual success Jamal might imagine wanting someday. Forrester is enormously talented and accomplished, but he also lives alone, largely cut off from the world.
Jamal has intelligence that has not yet found its place in society. Forrester has intelligence that has largely withdrawn from society. Neither man needs another degree or a higher IQ. What each needs is greater integration.
The human mind has extraordinary potential. It can compose symphonies, cure diseases, build civilizations and imagine things that do not yet exist. The same mind can rationalize cruelty, defend terrible ideas and become remarkably skilled at proving what it already believes.
An extraordinary mind can still become a closed system. We are now creating extraordinary artificial minds too. That does not automatically make them wise.
The Branch Above Us
For years I have used the image of an enormous Sequoia tree to think about human development. We stand on one of its branches and look out at the world. What we see from there may be completely real, but it is still a view from somewhere.
Most of us stand on roughly the same branch as the people around us. It feels comfortable and normal. It often seems like the logical and intelligent place to stand because nearly everyone we trust can see what we see. And because life keeps moving, we can spend years circling that same branch without slowing down long enough to ask where we are, what we may be missing or where we are actually going.
We can think harder, gather more information and become increasingly sophisticated without ever noticing that another branch exists above us.
You do not climb the tree merely by thinking harder. Other people often reveal branches you cannot see from where you are standing.
That is one reason community matters so much. Relationship shows us parts of ourselves that solitude cannot. Other people challenge us, irritate us, disappoint us, love us and expose consequences we could not see from inside our own thinking. There is an old line attributed to Ram Dass that captures it nicely:
“if you think you are enlightened, go spend a week with your family.”
Forrester needs Jamal as much as Jamal needs Forrester. Their relationship opens something in both men that intelligence alone could not reach.
This is where I think integrated wisdom begins. By integrated wisdom, I mean bringing intellect into relationship with emotion, intuition, the body, experience and community rather than asking the mind to do the whole job alone.
The mind gives us analysis, language, structure and discernment. The metaphorical heart receives differently, through intuition, creativity, resonance and feeling. Emotion becomes information, a kind of internal GPS. The body sometimes notices something before the conscious mind has words for it. Then life and community tell us whether what we think we understand actually works.
Without that feedback, we are painting in the dark.
Integrated wisdom is how we climb. It does not ask us to abandon the mind. It asks us to bring more of ourselves into the process.
AI may have a role here too. Used well, it can challenge an assumption, connect ideas we had kept separate, surface another perspective or show us consequences we had not considered.
AI may help us see the next branch. Integrated wisdom is what allows us to climb to it.
When Fear Takes Over the Imagination
Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma), the Indian humanitarian and spiritual leader, once said,
“In essence, anxiety is the misuse of our power of imagination. We have become experts at anxiously determining that, without any reason, only the worst will happen.”
I do not take that to mean danger is imaginary. It means fear can occupy so much of our imagination that catastrophe becomes the only future we know how to picture.
Consider what people are hearing about AI:
It may take your job.
It may deceive you.
It may eliminate the need for much of human work.
We may lose control of it.
It might eventually destroy us.
Then comes another message. We have to make it more powerful as quickly as possible because China might get there first.
No wonder people are anxious.
If we want artificial intelligence to become part of ordinary human life, telling people that it might make them unnecessary or destroy civilization is a strange way to earn their trust. That does not mean hiding the risks. It means risk cannot become the only thing our imagination is allowed to work on.
Are we really stretching the power of our imagination when it comes to AI’s future potential? I do not think we are. We seem much better at imagining what could go wrong than imagining what extraordinary intelligence, wisely integrated into society, might help us become.
Do Not Let China Choose Our Branch
Fear can shape our choices before we realize it. We hear that China is racing toward more powerful AI, so our response begins to feel obvious. We have to race faster.
But is that wisdom choosing our response, or simply human reactivity to fear?
China is a real national security challenge, and our government should treat it that way. Protect strategically important technology. Strengthen cybersecurity. Work with allies. Guard against theft and dangerous military uses. We have dealt with serious strategic competition before, and we should be working on that part now.
What I do not want is for fear of China to become the organizing principle for the kind of AI we build for ourselves.
If it does, China is helping determine American AI from the outside.
Fear has a way of convincing us that the branch we are standing on is the only sensible place to be. It narrows our choices until one response starts to feel inevitable. In this case, race first and figure out the consequences later.
We can take the threat seriously without allowing it to determine the destination. We can protect ourselves while still asking the harder question: what kind of intelligence do we actually want woven into our society and culture?
What Else Could AI Help Us See?
This may be the part of the AI conversation I find most hopeful.
We mostly talk about AI as something that will answer questions, replace tasks or perhaps become more intelligent than we are. But what if one of its more valuable roles is helping us recognize what we cannot see from our current branch?
AI can already help connect disciplines that humans tend to keep separate. It can challenge assumptions, compare competing ideas, explore consequences and bring together perspectives that would be difficult for one person to hold at the same time.
That does not mean handing over our judgment. Quite the opposite. We bring the life, values, experience and responsibility. AI can help widen the view.
That seems more interesting to me than simply building a faster answer machine.
Perhaps the real opportunity is not to ask AI to think instead of us, but to help us notice where our own thinking has become too small.
What Finding Forrester Leaves Me With
Jamal does not have to become less intelligent to live in society. The people around him have to become capable of recognizing what he brings. But Jamal also has to learn how to carry his intelligence inside relationships, responsibility, discipline, courage and community.
Forrester faces the other side of the same problem. His intelligence has become disconnected from life. Jamal helps bring him back into it.
That is why a movie from 2000 has something to say to me about AI in 2026. The technology may be new, but the question is an old one:
what happens when extraordinary intelligence is not yet integrated with the larger life around it?
The goal is not to suppress intelligence because it frightens us. It is also not to remove every boundary because intelligence impresses us. The work is to create the conditions in which intelligence can become something more.
The human mind has extraordinary potential. We are now building artificial minds with extraordinary potential too. The next reach up the tree may not be intelligence alone. It may be learning how to integrate intelligence with everything else that makes life worth living.
So can we become wiser as AI gets smarter? I think we can, but not simply by thinking harder from the branch we are already standing on. We have to be willing to look up, notice the next branch and integrate enough of ourselves to climb toward it.
AI may even help us see where it is.
Knowledge can be transmitted. Intelligence can be amplified. Wisdom has to be integrated. And that is the intention of this week’s AMP session.
AMP Session Note: Finding Forrester
Pattern: Relying so heavily on intelligence, assumptions, certainty or self protection that we lose contact with listening, relationship, feeling and the willingness to learn from what challenges us.
The original Finding Forrester AMP session moves repeatedly between those two sides of the pattern. It includes hiding knowledge to fit in, black and white thinking, relying on assumptions when something is not understood, getting pulled into unnecessary fights and needing to win when challenged. It also moves toward listening more deeply, integrating heart and mind, seeking understanding, learning through friction and discovering brilliance in unexpected people and places.
Let Go
I let go of hiding what I know so I can fit in.
I let go of needing everything to be black and white.
I let go of turning to assumptions when I do not understand something.
I let go of believing I have to win when someone challenges me.
I let go of allowing my intelligence or gifts to separate me from other people.
Allow
I allow myself to listen for the story beneath the words.
I allow my heart and mind to work together.
I allow myself to seek understanding instead of relying on assumptions.
I allow friction with other people to reveal something I may need to learn.
I allow myself to discover brilliance in unexpected people and places.
These statements are adapted directly from the themes and language of the original session.
Why the Intention Session Matters
In AMP, the Intention Session is used once as a bridge. It asks the mind and body to allow changes to process only in your own timing, with grace and ease. The purpose is not to force an immediate breakthrough, but to allow the film, statements and reflection to work together over time.
If you have already completed an Intention Session with another AMP film, it carries over. If this is your first one, speak these statements aloud:
I allow the changes in my own timing and only integrate what I am ready for.
I have faith that I will receive the benefits I desire.
I am patient with myself as I make these changes.
I let go of feeling I am too busy to take the time for this.
I let go of needing to understand how AMP works and allow myself to receive what is right for me.
Then nod your head yes, drink some water and take several slow, rhythmic breaths through your nose. After that, watch Finding Forrester all the way through.
